After much debating and researching you finally decided to get a car subwoofer. However you are limited to space. Well lucky for you some of the top car audio manufactures carry shallow-mount subwoofers that are perfect for anyone with limited space. Some believe that shallow-mount means low-bass; however companies like Kicker, Rockford Fosgate and MTX Audio have created a subwoofer than is not only slim but powerful. Below are 3 of the top Shallow-Mount subwoofers in the car audio industry. These subwoofers are able to produce enough bass to satisfy anyone’s need for a little more bump in their car.

NVX X-Series

Despite its size, the NVX XQW104 X Series shallow mount subwoofer can more than compete with standard mount subs. With an RMS rating of 500 watts, this 10” woofer brings some serious power to the table. This shallow mount sub features a custom made ultra-stiff and lightweight Egyptian Papyrus-Blend cone for some serious hard hitting lows. The woofer also comes with the patented oSD (oversized SD) surround, which increases the cone surface area by attaching the surround on a vertical edge. To further increase performance, the surround itself is constructed with a multi-radius elliptical edge which creates incredibly linear cone movement. NVX further improved the overall sound quality with an innovative aluminum short ring which increases power delivery to the 3” dual 4 ohm voice coil while greatly reducing distortion. With a mounting depth of just 4-7/8”, the XQW104 will fit virtually anywhere. The open aluminum basket was custom designed for greatly improved airflow, superior bass cone response and reduced interference. This sub is a perfect match for any vehicle that is tight on space.

Rockford Fogate Punch Stage 3 Series

With a name like Punch Stage 3, you know that the Rockford Fosgate P3SD412 is going to hit hard. The 400 watt RMS power rating is more than enough to really feel those lower frequencies while not overwhelming the rest of your music and sound. Rockford Fosgate has equipped this shallow-mount woofer with a Kevlar fiber semi-pressed paper cone and compressed poly-foam surround. This not only improves the performance of the subwoofer but it also increases the sturdiness and longevity, ensuring you keep on rocking for the years to come. The use of a 2-1/2” dual 4 ohm voice coil with spun-laced Nomex insulating collar will improve heat dissipation of the voice coil giving cleaner, more crisp and efficient bass. With a mounting depth of 3-5/8”, tear and fatigue resistant poly-cotton spider and all of its other features, this subwoofer is sure to impress and make you forget you are even running a shallow-mount subwoofer.

Pioneer Shallow Series

The Pioneer TS-SW251 Shallow Series subwoofer is designed to fit in the tightest of spaces in your car without sacrificing power or quality. Rated at 200 watts RMS, this 10” sub is perfect for mounting in the small spaces under or behind seats thanks to its 3-1/8” mounting depth. In order to create a sub with such a small mounting depth, Pioneer created a patent pending air suspension system which locks air between the main cone and the drive cone. To power your sound, these two cones movie in unison with the locked-in air behaving like a spring. This design removes the spider from the woofer while maintaining linear, reliable sound even after hours of use. The sub features a lightweight carbon glass fiber propylene cone and an M-shaped 3-layer interwoven radial surround to pump out the deep lows for your music. The fin shaped basket channels airflow sideways rather than downward to improve the overall performance and responsiveness of the sub. Forget about space limitations with the Pioneer Shallow series subs and get window rattling bass in your car.

By Ricky C. – Product Specialist

Interestingly enough, high excursion woofers don’t always have to contain the massively large magnet we’ve all become used to. Sometimes trying to fit bass into vehicles that are limited on space can be frustrating and compromising with a shallow-mount subwoofer not capable of high output can be a letdown. Compensate no more, introducing the new Alpine Type-R Thin Subwoofer, a woofer capable of producing 50mm of peak-to-peak excursion, and only have a mounting depth of 3 ½ inches or less.

Designing a subwoofer with such capabilities in a small area is no small feat. Revolutionary technology developed by Alpine allows this subwoofer to truly produce incredible bass, in enclosures as small 0.25 cubic feet! Technologies such as their High-Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) Suspension Design and their Segmented Spider Design using an aluminum composition allow this subwoofer to produce 15mm of real-world measured X-max. This subwoofer can deliver some of the best bass in its class with uniquely low distortion and incredible sound quality.

So we know what makes it lightweight, durable, and overall compact. How does this subwoofer produce such incredible bass? An impressively large 4” Voice Coil delivers increased power handling, alongside with a 1.5lb neodymium magnet. This magnet has 5 times the strength than standard ferrite magnets used for most subwoofers. The newly incorporated cast aluminum frame plays another part here with its doubling as a heat sink. High amounts of heat are generated by such a large voice coil and large magnet working in action together, and heat must be dissipated from the voice coil to prevent damage to the subwoofer. This subwoofer has calculated every factor into its ground breaking design.

Coming in two sizes, 10” and 12”, both require 300-600W RMS of continuous power. The 10” Alpine SWR-T10 can be fit into even the smallest boxes, requiring a sealed airspace measurement of 0.25 to 0.50 cubic feet. It’s 12” equivalent, the Alpine SWR-T12 requires a slightly larger box size of 0.40 to 0.75 cubic air space for sealed enclosures.

By Seth Wilde. – Product Specialist

Shallow mount subwoofers are a great compact substitution to full size subwoofers. As an example, look at the MB Quart RLP 304. Instead of having a deep mounting depth with a large magnet, these slim subwoofers are able to fit in locations that other subwoofers cannot. Traditionally, these compact subwoofers result in a slight loss of sound quality. However, with current advancements in subwoofer technology, the sound quality between full size subs and shallow mount subs have become practically unnoticeable.

There are several reasons why someone would choose a shallow mount subwoofer. In this blog, we will list some of these reasons and explain why a shallow mount subwoofer could be ideal for your car.

Not Enough Space for a Full Size Subwoofer

Some vehicles simply are not big enough for a full size car subwoofer. Recently, Sonic installed a pair of MTX TT6510-04 subwoofers in a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab truck. Due to the lack of available space in the truck, the only option for installing a subwoofer was underneath the rear seats. There are many trucks and smaller cars that do not have the space to install a subwoofer with a large enclosure. These vehicles are perfect for shallow mount subwoofers.

Don’t Want to Sacrifice the Space

Some people that travel a lot or constantly use the space in their trunk do not want to install a large enclosure for a subwoofer. While they still want to get the best sound quality in their car as possible, installing a full size subwoofer is out of the question. A smaller, shallow subwoofer takes up less room in the trunk, which allows more room for luggage, golf bags, groceries, and other items that are constantly put in the trunk.

Replacing Factory Subwoofer Locations

There are many vehicles out there that come with a factory subwoofer. A typical location of the subwoofer is in the trunk or on the rear deck of the car. Replacing these subwoofers with a higher-powered shallow mount subwoofer will greatly increase the sound quality and bass response of the vehicle. However, many of these factory subwoofers have small magnets and shallow baskets, making it difficult to install a full size subwoofer. Shallow mount subwoofers are ideal for these locations.
Fit in Locations that Other subwoofers Will Not

For custom applications, shallow mount subwoofers play an important role in getting subwoofers in unique locations. One popular example of a custom shallow mount subwoofer location is the rear doors. The Kicker CVT652 subs are common in this type of installation. By removing the speakers in the rear doors and replacing them with a shallow subwoofer, the car’s sound quality will increase and there will not be any loss of space. Doing an install like this typically involves sound dampening the doors and installing an amplifier, but the final result is worth the work.
