Adding a subwoofer is one of the best ways to improve your audio system, as it gives your music a deeper bass and more powerful sound.

While installing a subwoofer might seem intimidating at first, the process is pretty straightforward when broken down into simple steps and done correctly.

Pre-Installation To-Dos

Before anything else, you should have an idea of what type of subwoofer setup you’re going for. Most installs fall into these categories:

Passive sub and amplifier

Powered sub with a built-in amp

Factory stereo integration

Tools You’ll Need

Here are some of the things you’ll need for your subwoofer installation.

Subwoofer and enclosure

Amplifier (for a passive sub)

Amp wiring kit

RCA cables or line output converter (LOC)/speaker-level inputs

Speaker wire

Socket set, wire stripper/crimper, ring terminals, zip ties, panel tools, multimeter

Safety Guidelines

Any sort of installation or repair has its risks, regardless of how minor it is. For subwoofer installation projects, it’s important to disconnect the negative battery terminal before running power or making amp connections.

You should also fuse the power wire near the battery to avoid or minimize the risk of shorts.

How to Install a Subwoofer In a Car

Here’s a general guide on how most subwoofer installations go.

Step 1: Plan Mounting Locations

Sub boxes and powered subs are usually placed in the trunk or cargo area.

As for the amplifier, choose a solid surface with sufficient airflow, such as the seatback, trunk side panel, and amp rack. Avoid mounting it to thin plastic panels.

Step 2: Route the Power Wire from the Battery to the Amplifier

Find a safe path through the firewall. If necessary, use a factory grommet. Also, keep the power wire away from sharp edges and moving parts.

Then, install the inline fuse holder near the battery, but don’t insert the fuse just yet.

Step 3: Ground the Amplifier

Use a short ground. Ensure that it’s bolted to a bare and clean chassis metal. You can sand the paint down first, and use a star washer before tightening the bolts firmly.

Step 4: Run Signal to the Amp

If you’re working with an aftermarket head unit with RCA outputs, run the RCAs from the head unit to the amplifier.

To ensure noise reduction, route the RCAs on the opposite side of the vehicle from the power wire.

But if you have a factory head unit with no RCA sub output, you’ll need to use an LOC or amp with speaker-level inputs. Tap into the rear speaker wires, then feed the amp.

Step 5: Connect the Remote Turn-On Wire

The remote wire sends a 12V signal to switch the amplifier on or off with the radio. This wire is typically blue or blue with a mix of white.

Step 6: Wire the Subwoofer to the Amp

Connect the amp’s “SUB/SPEAKER OUT” to the sub box terminal cup or directly to the subwoofer.

If you’re working with dual voice coil subs or multiple subs, confirm the wiring to the final impedance that your amp can handle.

Step 7: Mount the Subwoofer to the Enclosure

If there’s a need to install the sub into a box, be sure to align the holes and create a tight seal around the enclosure.

Here’s a tutorial on how to install your subwoofer into a box

Step 8: Finalize Amp Connections

Plug all the necessary wires into the amplifier. Here are the connections you should keep an eye out for:

+12V (power wire from battery, fused)

GND (chassis ground)

REM (remote turn-on)

RCA / speaker-level input

Speaker output to subwoofer

Step 9: Insert the Fuse and Power Up

Reconnect the negative battery terminal and insert the inline fuse. Then, verify that the amp’s power light turns on when the radio does.

Step 10: Set Up Crossover and Gain

Below are some recommended baseline settings you can consider.

Low-pass filter (LPF): ~80 Hz (common starting point)

Subsonic filter: On if using a ported box

Bass boost: Off (at least until everything is clean)

Step 11: Test and Troubleshoot Accordingly

Test your setup by playing a test tune or a song of your choice. Check for rattles or loose panels, and make sure there’s no alternator whine or sub-polarity.

A properly installed subwoofer doesn’t just make your system louder. It also makes it sound better, adding depth and impact without distortion.

Taking the time to follow each step carefully helps protect your equipment and ensures long-lasting performance.

A boomy, muddy, or distorted subwoofer output is often attributed to mismatched settings. To help you get the most out of your sub, here’s a beginner-friendly tuning process that you can follow.

Proper Subwoofer Tuning Is Everything

You’ll know your subwoofer is tuned correctly when it can hit low notes cleanly without distortion or clipping.

A properly tuned subwoofer shouldn’t require you to turn the bass knob all the way to its maximum configuration just to make it louder.

Tools You’ll Need

You’ll need to prepare a couple of things when tuning your subwoofer, including the following:

A few songs you know well, including one bass-heavy track

A screwdriver for amp dials

Digital multimeter (to set gain using voltage)

Test tones (typically around 40–50 Hz)

Oscilloscope (optional)

How to Properly Tune a Subwoofer

Here’s a step-by-step subwoofer tuning guide that generally works for most basic audio setups.

Step 1: Start Flat

Disable anything that artificially boosts your bass. Make sure your head unit is flat, and turn off loudness and bass boost or the “punch EQ” on your amplifier.

Also, set the amplifier to a middle or default position instead of its maximum output.

Step 2: Set Your Head Unit’s Max Clean Volume

Your head unit’s max clean volume will help you determine your amp’s gain.

To get the max clean volume, you can play a clean track or test tone, and raise the volume up to the point where you can hear harshness or distortion.

Lower the volume slightly from there. Remember the volume number when the harshness or distortion disappears.

Step 3: Set the Amplifier Gain

Setting your amp’s gain is one of the most crucial steps to tuning your subwoofer properly.

During this step, your goal is to match the amp’s input sensitivity to your head unit. This will allow you to get a loud output without clipping.

There are generally two ways you can go about this.

Option 1: Use a multimeter

Disconnect the subwoofer from the amplifier

Play a 40-50 Hz test tone

Set the head unit to its max clean volume

Calculate the target voltage: Target AC voltage = √(RMS watts × speaker ohms)

Set your multimeter to AC volts at the amp’s speaker outputs

Turn the gain up until you hit the target voltage

Option B: Follow your amp’s official gain-setting procedure

Some manufacturers provide gain-setting guides or documents that contain all the information you need to properly set your amp’s gain.

For more information on how you can set your amp’s gain, watch the video below.

Step 4: Set the Low-Pass Filter (LPF) Crossover

Most manufacturers recommend starting at 80 Hz LPF on the subwoofer, as this allows the sub to handle bass while the door speakers handle mids, thereby reducing muddiness.

Keep in mind, however, that you might need to make some adjustments as you go through this step.

For instance, if the bass sounds localized in the trunk area with an 80 Hz LPF setting, you can trim that down to 70. If you notice a hole between the sub and speakers, you can raise the LPF to 90 Hz.

Step 5: Set the Subsonic Filter

If your enclosure is ported, utilizing a subsonic filter will help protect the sub from ultra-low frequencies that the box can’t control very well.

A common practice is to set the subsonic slightly below the box tuning frequency. If you don’t know your box tuning frequency, it’s best to keep it conservative and avoid aggressive low-end boosting.

Step 6: Set the Phase for a Stronger and Smoother Bass

Phase helps your sub and front speakers “push” together instead of canceling each other out.

To determine the best setting for your setup, you can try sitting in the driver’s seat while playing a steady bass line around the crossover region.

From there, switch the phase between 0° and 180°, and pick the setting that sounds louder and fuller at the seat.

First and foremost, you need to disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent damage to the vehicle’s electrical system during the installation. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal when adding new car electronics is an important safety measure that protects both the car and the person working on it. It helps to prevent electrical damage, ensures safety, and reduces the risk of accidental airbag activation.

Step 2: Remove the factory receiver

A popular addition to a car audio system is the subwoofer. Not only will a new car subwoofer enhance the overall sound and performance of your audio, but it also provides the necessary low frequencies and rumbling bass to make your system stand out. Gaining a general knowledge of car audio components will help you keep equipment running as it should while saving time and money from trips to the auto shop.

Sonic Electronix will walk you through the steps and tools needed to install a car subwoofer like a pro.

Prepare the tools you’ll need

Before unboxing your new subwoofer, make sure that you have the right tools and equipment you’ll need to detach the old subwoofer and attach the new one. Have these ready within your reach:

Wire Stripper

Electrical Tape

Speaker Wire

Panel Remover

(Flathead & Phillips) Screwdriver, right angle Phillips

Screws

Drill

Wrench

Pliers

Zip ties

Soldering Iron

Knife

Flashlight

Having complete installation equipment when installing a new car subwoofer is important because it ensures compatibility between the subwoofer and the car’s electrical system, allows for proper wiring and grounding, and ensures optimal performance and safety. Using incomplete or incorrect equipment can result in damage to the subwoofer or the car’s electrical system, poor sound quality, and even safety hazards. Therefore, having all the necessary equipment and following proper installation procedures is crucial for a successful and safe subwoofer installation.

Step 1: Strip the wire and connect it to the subwoofer terminals

First, cut at least one foot of positive and negative speaker wire. Depending on how you wire your subwoofer – in Series or Parallel – you may need more than one piece of each type of wiring. You need to strip at least half an inch of the insulation off the ends of the wire using your tool. Take care to put the wire in the right-sized groove for its gauge or you’ll cut it instead of stripping it.

At this point, you will run the wire through the terminal posts. Turn the subwoofer on its face in order to access the wiring terminals. Place the right side up as soon as possible to prevent damage to the cone and any fabric covering.

Step 2: Wire the subwoofer

Consider the impedance and power ratings of the subwoofer and amplifier. To wire a dual voice coil sub in parallel, simply run a wire to connect both of the positive leads together. Then run another wire from one of the positive leads to the amplifier. You will also do the same for the negative leads. Run a wire to connect both of them together, then another wire directly to the amp. Wiring in parallel will lower your impedance. Since there is a lower impedance, your amplifier can output more power.

To wire a DVC subwoofer in series, run a wire from one positive terminal to a negative terminal on the other side. Now, run a wire from the remaining positive and negative terminals to the connections on the amplifier.

All single voice coil subwoofers will be run in series and you only need to connect a wire to each of the positive and negative terminals directly to those connections on the amp. These are very simple to do when you only are installing a single subwoofer.

Step 3: Mount the sub in place

Now you need to place the subwoofer in the precut.

To mount the subwoofer, line up the subwoofer’s screw holes along the diameter of the enclosure opening. Mark the screw holes with a marker. Remove the subwoofer and drill the holes into the enclosure. Now place the subwoofer back into the enclosure’s hole and use the drill to screw in the subwoofer.

Before screwing in the subwoofer, you can add Poly-Fill to the inside of the enclosure using spray adhesive. This further enhances the sound since adding Poly-Fill simulates a larger box.

If you do not want to bother with wiring and mounting a subwoofer, you can order preloaded enclosure packages. All you need to do is fasten the loaded enclosure and connect it to the amplifier using speaker wires. Powered subs are an even simpler option because they include both an amplifier and woofer inside an enclosure.
Car amplifiers are an essential component of any car audio system, as they help to increase the volume and clarity of your music. However, if your amplifier is not turning on or is going into protect mode, it can be a frustrating experience.

In this blog, we will discuss some of the common causes of these problems and how to fix them.

Why does an amp go into protect mode?

There are numerous functional components in amplifiers, and each one is either expensive or challenging to repair. Particularly the power transistors, as the amp would be completely useless without them. Any amp problems could also have a negative impact on your car stereo’s speakers. If the speakers undergo voltage changes, the voice coil will burst, leaving you with lifeless speakers.

As a result, amplifiers have a fail-safe to safeguard other parts of your sound system. The amp is turned off at the first sign of trouble, protecting your speakers, power transistors, and audio system. Your sound system may be malfunctioning if your amplifier constantly enters protect mode. The issue needs to be investigated and fixed immediately. Avoid ignoring it because it can worsen later.

The majority of amplifiers have a protect light that turns on whenever the system notices an issue. If it is dark, consult the handbook to determine whether the amplifier is in protect mode. The state of the amp can also be shown by the power LED. When the amp is turned on and operating, it is typically green. The amp is in protect mode if it is red or orange.

Keep in mind that depending on the model and manufacturer, the protect mode indicator can vary. To be certain of the amp’s condition, read the owner’s manual.

What causes an amp not to turn on or go into protect mode?

Car audio enthusiasts know how aggravating it can be when their amplifier won’t switch on or automatically goes into protect mode. The following are some of the most frequent causes of car amplifiers failing to activate, as well as solutions to these problems:

1. Blown fuse

One of the most common reasons why a car amplifier doesn’t turn on is a blown fuse. A blown fuse can occur due to a power surge or other electrical problems, and it prevents the amplifier from receiving power. To solve this issue, locate the fuse for the amplifier and replace it with a new one of the same rating.

2. Low battery voltage

Another reason why a car amplifier may not turn on is low battery voltage. This can happen when the battery voltage drops below the minimum voltage required to operate the amplifier. To solve this issue, check the battery voltage and ensure that it is above the minimum voltage requirement. You may need to charge the battery or install a new one.

3. Overloading

Overloading can cause an amplifier to shut down. This can occur when the amplifier is asked to produce more power than it can handle. To avoid overloading, make sure the amplifier is not producing more power than its specifications. You can reduce the volume or adjust the gain control to prevent overloading.

4. Short circuit

A short circuit can cause an amplifier to shut down. This can occur when the amplifier’s wires touch, causing a direct electrical connection. To solve this issue, locate the short circuit and repair the damaged wires.

5. Dirty or loose connections

Dirty or loose connections can also cause an amplifier to shut down. This can occur when the connections between the amplifier and other components in the car audio system are not secure. To solve this issue, clean the connections and make sure they are tight.

It is important to check the battery voltage, replace the fuse, turn down the volume, fix damaged wires, and clean the connections if your car amplifier won’t come on for any reason. Seek professional assistance if the issue persists to prevent further damage to the amplifier.

Troubleshooting the issue

When your amplifier isn’t doing its job, have a look as one of our specialists at Sonic Electronix walks you through some troubleshooting steps you may do. Checking the amplifier’s power and ground with a multimeter to ensure it is within its functioning power range is just one of the many troubleshooting steps he demonstrates.

If you’re looking for quick and easy fixes on how to get your amp out of protect mode, here are some that we can recommend:

Disconnect your speakers

When you unplug the speakers from the amplifier, you’re essentially giving it first aid. Remove the RCA cords and speaker wires. The only cables that need to be plugged into the amplifier are the power, ground, and remote.

Restart the amplifier now. You probably have a blown speaker if you were able to disable the safety features.

Currently, you should test each and every speaker. The amplifier may be sensing a connection that is prone to overheating and going into protection mode to prevent damage if one of them is blown or grounded to a metal portion of the vehicle.

Use a multimeter to evaluate the speakers’ electrical response. The speaker has a problem if the engine is running but the voltage is less than 12V.

Check your amp’s temperature

If your amp is too hot to touch, it is overheating. There are many things that can cause an amp to get too hot, like a mismatched load, blown or grounded speakers, or a bad power connection.

Move the amp to an open area. It’s possible that it’s just too hot because there isn’t enough airflow. If possible, put it somewhere with space on the sides, top, or bottom so it can breathe better.

Unplug the head unit

A faulty head unit or wire connecting the amp to the head unit would be evidenced by the amp powering up normally when disconnected from the head unit.

Check ground connection

In order to perform properly, amplifiers require lengthy power and ground wires. When playing heavy bass, if either cord is too short, the amplifier will turn off and go into protection mode.

If the amplifier isn’t supplied with enough juice, it won’t power up or will remain in “protect” mode.

Check cables

All cords should be fastened securely, which is, to be honest, rather obvious. One of the wires may be faulty if your amplifier enters protect mode when first turned on.

Check for frayed, corroded, or shorted wires.

Check your amp’s impedance load

Amps frequently fail because of a mismatched load. If you connect an amplifier that can handle 2 ohms to speakers that can handle 4 ohms, the amplifier will sense the low impedance and attempt to increase its output to compensate.

Overheating and shutting down occurs as a result of the additional power use. Make sure the amplifier can withstand the overall impedance load by testing each speaker and subwoofer.

Reset the amp’s gain

Your amplifier has an adjustment for gain. This piece of equipment links the amplifier’s input to the head unit’s output. Once the gain is adjusted, the sound is clean and full without any unwanted noise.

While this isn’t directly related, it’s important to note that improper gain settings might cause sound distortion and even speaker damage, which could cause your amplifier to enter protection mode.

Your in-car listening experience can benefit significantly from a stereo upgrade. Many of today’s car stereos come equipped with high-tech extras that make driving more pleasurable, like Bluetooth wireless technology, in-built GPS systems, and crisp, clear touchscreen displays.

Newer car stereos also typically have superior sound quality and compatibility with a more extensive selection of audio formats, making it simpler to enjoy your preferred music and audio content at a higher rate.
Upgrade your speakers

When you upgrade your car’s speakers, you’ll hear more precise music and have a better time behind the wheel. Most vehicles’ factory speakers could be of better quality and provide a satisfying listening experience.

Better sound quality expanded dynamic range, and enhanced bass response is all possible benefits of upgrading to higher-quality speakers. Furthermore, new speakers are typically more long-lasting and better able to manage the power delivered by today’s car audio systems.

When it comes to car audio and car electronics, there’s no better place to shop online than Sonic Electronix. Choose from various car speaker kinds and sizes in our extensive inventory, including the popular 6.5 and 6×9 inches, packages and bundles, installation kits, and other accessories.

Having a subwoofer in your car stereo system can significantly improve the quality of the music by delivering deep, punchy bass that is absent from the sound produced by the factory speakers.

With the help of a subwoofer, you can experience the full range of a song’s frequency spectrum, including the low, deep bass that can draw you into the music. Subwoofers supplement midrange and high-frequency speakers for a fuller, more immersive listening experience.

Adding a subwoofer to your car stereo system can significantly improve your listening experience, turning your commute into a musical adventure with deep, dramatic bass.

Sonic Electronix is the go-to for high-quality automotive audio devices and expert installation.

When it comes to upgrading the car audio system, a frequently asked question involving factory-issued car amplifiers always comes up: Do I bypass or retain my car amplifier?

To cut to the chase, here are our main answers: You can always choose to keep your factory amp. But for some vehicles, you really have no other choice. Retaining your factory amplifier will make it easier for you to install a new stereo that has limits depending on what the factory amp can do.

On the contrary, bypassing the factory amp results in a better performance on your new stereo and even improve the quality of your factory speakers – all results in amping up your listening experience despite the extra time and effort that it takes to run the bypass harness to the factory amp that’s often located in hidden parts of your car.

In this blog, we will show you how to bypass your car’s factory amplifier from our in-house experts’ perspective.

Replacing The Factory Speakers

We recommend changing the factory speakers before installing the new stereo. To do this, you must be equipped with the right pry tools and knowledge on how to properly take out each door speaker including the tweeters.

For this guide, we replaced the front speakers with the NVX NSP65KIT featuring two 6.5-inch mid-woofers, a pair of 20mm tweeters, and two crossovers.

We paired the rear speakers with the corresponding 6.5-inch NVX NSP65 coaxial speakers straight into the OEM mounting brackets in the back doors.

Installing A New Aftermarket Radio

Now it’s time to change the factory stereo to a new and improved one. We picked an aftermarket stereo that’s the best fit for our new setup. We first started by taking out the dash trim pieces first using a set of prying tools to avoid damaging the dash panel. Then we removed the retaining bolts and disconnect the electrical connectors and antenna that are hooked up to the radio in order to fully detach it.

Changing Between The Integration Adapter & Bypass Harness

Configuring the radio’s wiring harness that’s connected to the factory amp, our team decided to compare the sound by switching between the amp integration harness and bypass setups harness.

With the amp integration harness, we noticed a small improvement in sound. The new speakers bounced to life via the factory amplifier. Although the installation was just simple plug-and-play, we expected the NVX speakers to perform well, but they sound a bit underwhelming.

Then comes our next test: using the bypass harness.

When our team played the music, the mid and high frequencies that we didn’t know were missing on our first test, appeared. Not only that, but the bass made the sound well-rounded and natural. We were hearing the NVX speakers loud and clear. From the woofers to the tweeters.

Our team could’ve opted to utilize the factory amplifier in running both the new speakers and the aftermarket radio. Not only does this standard amp still works, but it also has a crossover network that filters out some frequencies that might not sound good with a fresh setup. Instead, we chose to bypass the factory amp by directly connecting the NVX speakers to the aftermarket radio so we could get the best sound quality possible via an unfiltered, full-range signal.

Setting Up The Bypass Harness

Now that we’ve proven that using the bypass harness greatly improves the speakers’ performance and overall sound quality, it was time to address the wiring routes of the adapter to the factory amp.

As we’ve mentioned earlier, this involves finding where the factory amp is located. The location of a factory amp varies on every car, but it is a general rule that amplifiers should be located in hidden yet open spaces where there is proper ventilation to prevent overheating. These locations can be under the seats of your car, the trunk, the sidekick panels, inside the dashboard, or the rear package tray.

If you have trouble locating where your factory amplifier is, refer to your car’s manual or look up your car’s model online.

Once the routing is complete, our team made sure that the wires are neatly tucked and hidden to not endanger the connection to the factory amp.

The Result

After the setup, we made a final sound check. And we’re more than happy to hear the superb sound quality and performance of this new car audio build.

In some cases, our experts do not always recommend bypassing the factory amplifier. This process depends on your vehicle and car audio system.

Before trying to perform this procedure on your vehicle, consult our in-house experts first via email at support@sonicelectronix.com or call us at 1-502-200-8010!
Adding an amplifier to a car audio set up, allows the components to receive a higher flow of power. Not only will there be more voltage, but the volume will receive a boost on top of the improved sound quality streaming from the speakers.

An amplifier shines when it’s hooked up to a fully loaded system; subwoofers outfitted in the trunk, speakers in the door panels and a new double DIN head unit mounted on the dashboard.

Proper amplifier installation will create these traits, but will help safeguard your entire car from system overloads or circuitry shorts. The following steps will guide you through an at-home install and how to check if your pre-existing amp is properly connected.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal

Disconnecting the power protects both you and your gear.

Find a Suitable Place to Mount the Amplifier

Amp placement will have a significant effect on the unit’s lifespan. One of the most common locations is under the driver’s or passenger’s seat. This method not only keeps your car looking factory by hiding the amp, it also allows for a central location where you can route all your speaker wires.

Since amps crank up the energy to deliver the right amount of power to the speaker, they can generate heat. Set it up in a location with decent ventilation. Installers recommend placing it under the seat or in the trunk of the vehicle.

For an amplifier to function properly it needs three major connections; One to power, another to input, and to an output.

Connect Ground Cable

The next primary connection will be grounding the amplifier by wiring a lead to the car’s metal chassis. Look for a nearby metal bolt on the car’s chassis and fasten the ground cable to it. If you can’t find a bolt nearby, drill your own screw somewhere close to the amp but still in contact with the metal chassis. The ground terminal needs to be in constant contact with the car’s bare metal, so you should sand away paint and material at the point of contact for the best possible connection.

Connect Power Cable

With a ring terminal, connect the wire to the positive battery terminal and secure it with a nut. Take the other side of this power cable and connect it to the fuse holder. From the other side of the fuse holder, connect and run the wire to the amp’s positive terminal.

On most vehicles, you should be able to run the wire through the firewall that protects the engine from the main cabin with an existing entry hole. Run the wire on the floor of the car under the carpet to your amplifier.

Mount the fuse holder close to the battery for easy access

Connect Remote Turn on Wire and RCA cables on stereo

Run these cables on the opposite side of the car from the power wire to input on the amp. This should keep excess noise from ruining your audio. Now the receiver has an audio source.

Connect to Subwoofer

Take speaker wire and place it into the speaker wire terminal and screw the opposite end of the speaker wire down into the amp.

Tuning your audio equipment is one of the most important things you can do. With an amplified system, if you don’t set your gains properly, you could end up with poor audio. Adjusted the right way, your speakers will sing or scream depending on what you’re looking for.

A monoblock amplifier is often used to add a single subwoofer to your pre-existing speakers. These amps will come with features to specifically shape the sound of your bass.

Improper tuning can create distortion, which can sound like buzzing, crackling, hissing, whomping, and various other noises that intrude on the instruments of your music. Too low and you’ll be greeted by the hiss of background noise; too high and the music will be accompanied by distortion and clipping.

VAD17001 1700W RMS V-Series Class-D

Gain

A gain level is not a volume knob, it controls the level of power being delivered to the subwoofer. Gain is the ratio between the volume at the input and the volume at the output of an electrical circuit.

Setting the gain will ensure your sub is getting the right flow of energy without blowing it up. With your volume up to 75%, turn the gain knob up until you hear distortion. Back off on the gain roughly 5-10%.

Subsonic Filter

This filter prevents any frequencies that are not audible to be blocked. This filter is usually set around 20 Hz. It acts as a safeguard to keep from damaging your subwoofer.

Bass Boost

Can either be displayed at a fixed “on/off” or variable from 0 – 12dB. With a controllable boost, it will give that extra kick to the bass frequency you selected. If it’s fixed, it’ll always give a 12dB boost at 45hz.

Bass Frequency

Variable from roughly 40-100Hz. This is the frequency that will receive the boost.

Low-Pass Filter

This allows the low frequencies to pass or be allowed to play by setting the “ceiling” of the frequency band. This feature is used mainly for subwoofers. The low frequency spectrum will contain any frequency of about 100 Hz or lower.

Phase

This feature ensures that the sound from your subwoofer reaches you at the same time as your speakers. For example, if you are hearing an echo, you should set your phase to 0. This feature is adjustable from 0-180 degrees.

Enhancing your car audio stereo system can cost a pretty penny, and what most people want in return for that hard earned money is superior sound quality. Good quality amplifiers, subwoofers, and speakers all improve the quality of sound your vehicle’s audio system produces, however, they do not eliminate unwanted sounds such as road noise or rattles your car may make.

This cargo van has covered the interior of the cargo space with sound deadening.

Getting a handle on that exterior noise can be as simple as installing sound deadening to eliminate the excess vehicle vibration and engine clatter. Most car audio experts recommend adding sound deadening (or damping) equipment to your vehicle because it optimizes your sound system.

One issue that is prevalent in cheaper cars and other older vehicles is the shakes, rattles, and road noise that you are forced to experience on nearly an everyday basis. This is caused by cheap hard plastic material getting loose over time from regular vibrations and bumps with little to no damping to stop the rattles. These rattles most commonly occur in areas such as door panels, the dash, and trunk lid.

Car doors themselves are not very good speaker enclosures, given that they are constructed from thin, hallowed out sheet metal. The poor acoustic environment results in discordant speaker rattling and vibration. Sound dampening eliminates negative wave cancellation, when the sound bounces off parts of the car before racing your ears, which reduces volume output and clarity.

Use a rubber roller to guarantee a tight seal.

Adding sound deadening will not only reduce the shake, but by taking up that extra room in the panels of the car – it will fill up the “space,” make the panels more rigid and less flexible which cuts down on the room the sound has to bounce around and lose quality. It’s difficult to measure the square footage needed to cover your car. There are specific kits made for your whole vehicle, which are usually called “bulk packs”, and kits made specifically for your trunk, doors, floor, roof, hood, speaker panels, and even license plates. It comes in many different sizes and thicknesses based on what you’re going to use it for. The most common form of sound dampening material comes in sheets or strips and is applied with an adhesive on the back of the sheet for installation that is then rolled on with a special tool.

Adding sound dampening layers to your panels is the non-electrified version of amplifying your system, because it creates an environment for a purer sound stage. Sound deadening materials are typically weather and temperature resistant, which ensures you will enjoy premium sound quality for many years to come.

Installation Steps

When installing sound deadening material, take a spin around the block in your car with the radio off to see where the most unwanted noise or rattles are coming from. The main places the annoying rattles come from are the vehicle’s floor, wheel wells, firewall, doors, roof of the trunk, and under the rear seats. Refer to your vehicle’s service manual for information on how to dismantle the trimming panels. Be careful when removing the panels to avoid breaking the fixing clips.

Once the trimming is dismantled, remove the remainder of the factory insulation if it is damaged. If it is still intact, there is no need to permanently remove it. Next, you need to properly clean, dry and degrease the prospective surface. Sound deadening won’t adhere properly if applied to a wet or dirty surface. Use a metal surface cleaner or degreaser along with a dry, clean rag. Make sure to use gloves and apply the degreaser in a well-ventilated space.

Measure the prospective surface you are going to treat. To make things easier, make a template on a large sheet of paper and then transfer it to the damping material. That will make it easier to install it more accurately and avoid wasting material. Use a utility knife to cut the desired shape and size.

Place a sheet of sound damping to the surface without removing the protective film. If it covers the surface properly, you are ready to install it. Gradually remove the protective paper film as you apply it to the surface for better adhesion. Once on the surface, press it down firmly until it is set in place. Flatten it with your hands to avoid unnecessary air bubbles. Use a rolling tool like the NVX SDRLR2 to press the mat down to the metal surface. Go across the entire surface with the roller to ensure that the sheet is installed properly.

Once all sound dampening is in place, simply reinstall all trim pieces and carpet back to its original placement. Now you are ready to enjoy higher sound quality with fewer vibrations.

Once you have installed the first application of deadening material, take another drive with the radio on and find any leftover rattles.

Sound Deadening Materials

Road noise and engine noise are a completely different issue. CLD products do very little to stop radiated sound from entering a vehicle. This is where you will need to use a sound barrier product such as Mass Loaded Vinyl or MLV.

MLV products are made of a dense but flexible Vinyl that has a very low resonant frequency which makes it ideal as a sound barrier. When used properly this layer of MLV will encompass the entire vehicle from the window line down to create an environment that is isolated from the outside world. You need to make sure that you minimize any cracks or seams in this layer of MLV that would allow radiated sound to penetrate the cabin. This requires that you overlap the seams and use either tape or a vinyl adhesive to complete the seal.

Panel Vibration can be caused by the tires reacting to the surface of the road, the engine and drive train or even the sound system of the vehicle. The most effective way to eliminate this type of noise is to stop the vibration. The best way to do this is to add to the rigidity of the panel that is vibrating.

Constrained Layer Damper or CLD is the most common type of Sound Deadening that is used in Car Audio. CLD products are usually constructed with a layer of Butyl Rubber that is attached to a constraining layer such as Aluminum. CLD products are attached directly to the vehicle by a layer of adhesive on the Butyl Rubber side.

CLD products add mass to the panels of the vehicle in order to increase the rigidity of the panel which in turn stops the vibration. In most cases 50% coverage of a panel is enough to eliminate unwanted vibrations.

Road noise and engine noise can also be minimized by using a sound absorber. It can be very difficult to get MLV to adhere to an inverted surface such as the roof, hood or trunk of a car. The weight required to qualify MLV as a great sound barrier becomes a problem when trying to keep it from peeling away from the surface.

Closed Cell Foam or CCF is a good choice for these surfaces. Due to the size constraints of the vehicle CCF is not as effective as MLV at minimizing lower frequencies but it still does a good job at reducing higher frequencies. For any material to be effective as a sound absorber it needs to be 1/4th the thickness of the frequencies’ wavelength. Some sound absorbers have an added layer of protection from heat that makes them ideal for under the hood. They can also be used on the transmission tunnel and firewall to repel heat that is radiated by the engine and transmission.

The last type of noise is rattling that occurs when two or more vibrating panels make intermittent contact with each other. CCF can also be used as a vibration decoupler or cushion between two panels to stop the rattling. CCF is a great choice for this because the closed cell structure will not absorb moisture or odor from inside the door panel or liquids that may be spilled inside the vehicle.
