Adding a subwoofer to your car audio system will allow you to get that extra bass that will help enhance your listening experience. Often times without one, you could be missing out on a lot of that low-frequency sound in your music. Car subwoofers provide depth to the sound of your music by supplying accurate bass beats to supplement the high-frequency musical tunes. We carry car subs in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your specific needs.

However, buying a subwoofer is a more complex process than picking one at random, throwing it in your car, and wiring it up. Some research is highly recommended so that you can choose the perfect subwoofer for your system. When choosing car subwoofers, you also need to keep in mind things like the amount of space in your vehicle’s cab or trunk and what kind of music you listen to. Most car audio enthusiasts take particular pride in their woofers.

When buying a subwoofer there are a couple of things you may want to consider before pulling that “Checkout” trigger. Read on!

Choosing The Right Subwoofer Size For Your System

Before you purchase a new subwoofer, it is important to note the physical size of the subwoofer you want. As with everything in car audio, space is not always readily available, and subwoofer sizes can vary from slim fit subs to 18″ behemoths. The size of your subwoofer (the diameter) is important to know for installation processes and if you are planning to purchase or build an enclosure. The most popular subwoofer sizes are 10″ and 12″. Other common subwoofer sizes are 6.5″, 8″, 13″, 15″, and 18″.

It is also critical for you to be aware of the mounting depth space you have to work with and the mounting depth of the subwoofer that you are planning on purchasing. If you buy a subwoofer that has a mounting depth greater than you have to work with, you’ll either have to get a different subwoofer or do some serious modifications.

Knowing What Type of Subwoofer You Need

The next thing you have to consider is whether you want an enclosed subwoofer or a component subwoofer. An enclosed subwoofer contains an internal amp. This makes this option much easier to install. This option also saves space and is easier to install as opposed to component subs. Component subs rely on an external amp to power them. These take up more space and can oftentimes be more costly. However, there is a noticeable difference in overall sound quality. This option is far more customizable to your needs. They are also more tedious to install because you have to build the enclosure and properly wire them.

What Are Voice Coils?

A voice coil is the coil of wire attached to the cone. Driving a current through the voice coil produces a magnetic field, which in turn moves the cone. The number of voice coils allows for different wiring configurations. The type of voice coil setups includes single, dual, or quad voice coil. Dual voice coil subs have more wiring flexibility than single voice coil subs; however, single voice coil subwoofers provide easier hookup options for wiring multiple subwoofers in parallel or series. You may run a dual voice coil (DVC) sub in parallel, series, or combination. A quad voice coil has four voice coils and is equal to two dual voice coil subwoofers (in terms of wiring capabilities).

What Materials Are Used In A Subwoofer Cone?

Paper cones produce natural-sounding bass, but are the least durable cone material. This is why you commonly see materials such as polypropylene being used for cones. Polypropylene tends to be more durable than paper, but also retains some natural sound. Finally, you’ll find titanium cones and other materials in some premium woofers. This is all used for specific reasons depending on the manufacturer and can provide different-sounding bass.

Do I Need To Purchase An Enclosure?

Component subwoofers should be mounted in an enclosure for optimal performance. You can choose a sealed, ported, bandpass, or truck & shallow-mount box based on your subwoofer specifications and available vehicle space. We also offer premade package deals under Subwoofers with Enclosures. These Enclosed Subwoofer Systems include subwoofers prebuilt into a box.

If space is at a premium, consider installing a powered subwoofer, which is essentially an enclosure loaded with an amplifier and a woofer. We also offer vehicle-specific subs that are specially designed to save space and match the interior of your vehicle.

Is Getting A Big Subwoofer Better?

In the case of car subwoofers, bigger is not necessarily better. The best subwoofers have high sensitivity ratings. These measures how effectively a speaker converts power into sound. Subs with a higher sensitivity rating will play louder, given a set amount of input power.

To demonstrate, consider the following example. If “SUBWOOFER A” has a relatively lower power rating than “SUBWOOFER B”, but “SUBWOOFER A” has a relatively higher sensitivity rating, then “SUBWOOFER A” will play louder (assuming the sensitivity differences are substantial). Therefore, a smaller subwoofer with higher sensitivity ratings can boom louder than a larger subwoofer with lower sensitivity.

Taking Power Into Consideration

The RMS power handling rating refers to the amount of power a car subwoofer can handle on a continuous basis. Pairing your amps and subs with incorrect RMS power ratings could cause harm to the amplifier or subwoofer. It is ideal to match the combined total RMS wattage of the subwoofers to the amplifier.

We recommend slightly over-powering your subwoofer based on its recommended RMS power rating. This will help prevent accidentally over-powering or blowing your sub. You should select a subwoofer based on the amount of power output generated by your amplifier, the sub’s impedance, and the voice coil specifications.

For ease and convenience in finding the right amplifier for your subwoofers, check out AmpliFinder: An Amplifier Finder Tool designed and tested by Sonic Electronix. Just select your subwoofer’s manufacturer, model number, and how many subs you’ve got, and wait to discover the best amp that matches your setup.

Series vs. Parallel Wiring

Another thing you have to consider is series vs parallel wiring. Subwoofers come in SVC (Single Voice Coil) which means it has two wiring terminal posts: one positive and one negative.

There are two ways of connecting these two terminal posts to the amplifier through Series and Parallel wiring to properly manage the overall impedance load.

Wiring in Series will double the impedance load and reduces RMS power.

Example: If we wire two 4-ohm voice coils together in series the total impedance will now be 8 ohms

Wiring in Parallel cuts the impedance load in half and increases RMS power.

Example: Two 4-ohm subs wired in parallel = 4 ohms/ 2 coils = 2-ohm impedance

Subwoofers also come in DVC (Dual Voice Coil), adding another pair to the positive and negative terminals to give more options in wiring the sub.

The impedance measures the load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier, or the amount of resistance to the current flow. Car subwoofer impedance can be rated at a 2 ohm, 4 ohm, or an 8 ohm load. When you are trying to match up a subwoofer’s power rating with an amplifier, be sure the power ratings are estimated at the same ohm load.

Within the last decade or so, Double Din units have become the norm. It’s been a necessity since 2018 when back-up cameras became legally required in vehicles.

The first step is to assess what features you’d like to add or keep in your stereo. Initially specifications like the display interface or touchscreen functions will lead you to determine if you want smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Do you need built-in Bluetooth or just an Aux or USB input?

With your new head-unit, shift into looking at replacing the car speakers so you can enjoy the full potential of your sound system.

Factory speakers can be cheap and wont last for the life of your vehicle. Aftermarket speakers are made with higher quality materials and produce higher fidelity sound.

Replacing your factory speakers with some aftermarket coaxial speakers can make a noticeable difference in sound quality. Coaxial includes multiple drivers in one unit to provide a fuller range of sound without having to install multiple speakers – usually at a lower price point.

Component speakers allow for more customization of your soundstage design and investing in range specific speakers. Wiring these systems take a bit more work and require an amplifier to ensure all the proper signals are being channeled to and from the stereo.

Like with head units, each vehicle will come with a set speaker opening. Sonic Electronix offers 3.5” to 8” sizes. Via our My Garage function on the home page or fitment guide, you can shop with pre-filled results for products that will work with your ride.

Amplifiers

Amplifiers function just like the namesake implies – they amplifier the power of your speakers to produce more sound.

Head units can only produce a limited amount of power, with a more intense system set up an amp is needed to keep sound clear without shorting out your audio.

When considering an amplifier, you need to make to get the correct number of channels. A monoblock amp can only be used to power a subwoofer while a 2 or 4-channel amp. A 5-channel can power 4 speakers and a subwoofer all at once. Also, make sure to pay attention to the class of the amp, class D for example, are extremely efficient and high-powered.

When installing an amp, it is important to consider the strength of your alternator so that you won’t experience power issues like dimming headlights or even dead batteries.

So, you are in the market for some subwoofers. When looking at all of the dual empty and loaded subwoofer boxes available, you have likely noticed that car audio manufacturers only sell options with two subs of the same shape and size.

If you plan on building on your own box, you may have wondered whether or not you can install two subs of different sizes in the same box. In this article, we are going to take a look at how this might be possible and the reasons why you probably shouldn’t do so.

Can You Install Two Different Sized Subs in the Same Box?

Technically, yes you can install two different sized subs in the same box. For example, let’s say you are making your own box and already have a 15” subwoofer and a 12” subwoofer. Rather than going out and buying a second woofer that matches one of those sizes, you might think about just installing the two different subs in that new box you are fabricating.

If you make the appropriate cutouts you can install both sizes. The main question to consider is should you actually do so and what impact having those two different subs will have on your box’s performance.

Should You Install Two Different Sized Subs in the Same Box?

If you asked around to car audio experts, they will likely all say that you should not mix the subwoofer sizes or different brands in the same box. Although it is obviously possible to do so, you need to consider the effects of having two different sized subs in the same box will have on your car audio system.

What’s the big deal? Won’t the box still work and sound good? When boxes are manufactured, there are numerous things that are taken into consideration. For example, a 15” subwoofer will not only handle more power than that of a 12” woofer, but it will also require more air space as well. Mixing those two subs together will make your box “out of tune” in a sense.

The two subwoofers would be operating together in the same air space although they would run differently. The larger woofer would also be noticeably louder than the other and have a bigger presence in your vehicle.

If you really want to build a box or use one with two different sized subs, it would be highly recommended that you add a divider between the two so each has its own, separate chamber versus one open air space for both to share. Furthermore, you would also need to get two separate amplifiers that would correctly match the power handling of each woofer.

To conclude, while it is possible to install different sized subs in the same box, it is not recommended and will not help the sound of your system. Instead, it will likely lead to an in-balanced sound in your car. We always recommend to our customers to purchase identical subwoofers when installing two or more, that way the specifications will be perfectly matched.

If you are looking to save some time, take a look at our pre-built empty subwoofer enclosures.
Historically, subwoofers have been enclosed in massive boxes that take up your entire trunk or hatch space; now, many brands are attempting to appeal to larger audiences by supplying more compact options such as under the seat subwoofers. But, are they really any good?

Advantages to Using Under the Seat Subwoofers

The first advantage is fairly obvious, they are incredibly compact and practical. These units take up much less space in comparison to other sub boxes. You can easily stow them away underneath your seat in a space that would normally go completely unused. It is important to note that these compact enclosures can also be installed elsewhere such as your trunk or hatch. Where you install it is completely up to you and your preferences. These are a great option for pickup trucks, hatchbacks, coupes, and other smaller vehicles who don’t have much interior storage capacity.

Another advantage of these types of enclosures is their ease of installation. Under the seat subwoofers are typically loaded and amplified which makes it easier on you because the amplifier, subwoofer, and enclosure were all specifically designed for one another. We even offer the NVX QBUS8v2 with the amp kit included for under $150.

How Well do Under the Seat Subwoofers Perform and Sound?

One concern people have when considering under the seat subwoofers is whether or not they perform well, are loud enough and have enough bass for their liking. While they may not be as powerful as a full-sized subwoofers, they are very comparable in performance to that of most shallow mount subwoofers. Under the seat subwoofers were made for the individual that is just looking to add some extra bass and get better sound quality in the low-end frequencies than what they are currently getting from just their speakers. You will hear a massive difference in your overall performance of your sound system by delivering a more well-rounded sound quality, thus making your daily commute much more enjoyable.

Our Picks for Under the Seat Subwoofers

NVX QBUS8v2

Regular Price: $119.99

This is a great affordable option for anyone who wants to add some bass to their system and doesn’t want to break the bank. What separates the QBUS from other compact bass solutions is the acoustic performance and quality of the construction. While it won’t shake your rearview mirror off, the low-end response of the QBUS is perhaps best described as strikingly powerful; the tight, crisp bass carries a strong presence without overpowering the more delicate frequencies. This compact bass system also includes the bass knob while many other manufacturers will sell them as an add-on.

Purchase the QBUS8v2 with the amp kit included

Regular Price: $299.95

The BassLink SM powered subwoofer is purpose-engineered to fit under the seat of many vehicles, and compliments a car audio system’s full-range speakers with modest bass. Its slim-profile, 8″ woofer delivers low-frequency enhancement from a shallow-profile enclosure. A crossover control and flexible EQ adjustments let you tune the BassLink SM to your system, your car’s acoustic environment and your listening preferences.

These subwoofers offer an incredible amount of power for their small form factor. While most Under Seat subwoofers only are offered in 8” options, the VPAS series from Cerwin Vega come in both 12” and 10”. This allows them to produce significantly more bass at 250 and 200 Watts RMS respectively. Similar to the QBUS8v2 these bass packages also offer an included bass remote in the box.

Purchase the VPAS10 with the amp kit included

For most people, one of these under seat subwoofers would be the perfect addition to their current car audio system. The difference that these subs would offer would be noticeable almost immediately and you don’t have to sacrifice all of your storage space in order to install one.

Car subwoofers are a critical component to having a well-rounded sound in your vehicle. Their ability to provide the low and deep sound range help bring balance to the mid and high frequencies of your other car speakers.

Here are 5 fast facts about car subwoofers that can help you better understand their importance and functionality:

1. Car Subwoofers Come in Multiple Sizes

The most common car subwoofers are 8”, 10”, 12”, and 15”. As the size of the subwoofer increases, the sound typically gets louder and offers more bass. As an example, an 8” sub will not be able to handle as much power, and therefore will produce less bass. This is because their cones have a smaller surface area; however, they may provide slightly better clarity.

Love listening to bass-heavy genres like Hip-Hop or EDM? In that case, you will likely want a 12” or 15” subwoofer for the deepest bass possible.

Kicker CompRT TCWRT122

2. There are Multiple Package Variations to Choose From

Car subwoofers can be purchased by themselves, enclosed, powered or even vehicle specific. Let’s take a quick look at each:

Component Subwoofers: A component sub comes without any enclosure and is just the speaker or subwoofer itself. This is a good option for someone looking to custom install or create their own box.

Loaded Subwoofer Enclosures: These subs come fully enclosed in a custom fit box for easy and quick installation. Keep in mind enclosed subwoofers require an amp for power.

Loaded & Powered Subwoofer Enclosures: Powered subs not only have the sub and enclosure but also an amplifier for power. These are easy to install and can provide a great solution for your needs. There also some unique options in this category including under-seat subwoofers and even spare tire enclosures. These compact solutions are perfect for someone who wants to add a little bass, but lacks the space in their vehicle to install a full-sized subwoofer box.

Vehicle Specific Subwoofer Boxes: Vehicle specific subs are custom made to fit your specific vehicle. One of the most popular manufacturers for these types of enclosures is JL Audio. They have a wide range of vehicle compatibility for their Stealth Box line. These are produced for easy installation, but they can get very costly in most cases.

3. Car Subwoofers Have Different Impedances

The impedance of your subwoofer is something that is important to be aware of when you are wiring them to an amplifier. Most subwoofers are going to have an impedance of single 2 or 4 ohms or dual 2 or 4 ohms. The difference between single or dual is explained further in this article; however, in short, “dual” means it has 2 voice coils and these subwoofers can be wired to two different impedances. A dual 2-ohm subwoofer can either be wired in 1 or 4 ohms while a dual 4-ohm subwoofer can be either wired in 2 or 8 ohms.

Belva Vented Sub Box 1SV12G

4. Match Your Subwoofer to a Correct Size Enclosure

If you are purchasing a component subwoofer, it is important to note that subwoofer boxes are NOT universal. In a subwoofer’s manual, it should note the correct box size that your subwoofer will require. It should provide at least a minimum and a maximum box volume that your subwoofer will require. You can then use that information to purchase the perfect box for your subwoofer.

The reason behind this is the amount of air space that your subwoofer will require to produce the best sound possible. A bigger subwoofer with a larger surface area and a larger box with more air space means more low-end bass. If you want to install a subwoofer into a smaller, more compact enclosure, then it will require a slim subwoofer like the Kicker CompVT CVT122. Check out all of our shallow mount subwoofers we offer.

Alpine Type-R SWR-10D2

5. The Quality of Materials Matter

If you have ever heard the crackly, staticky, popping sound coming from your subwoofer, you felt the pain and anguish of a blown speaker. This unfortunate situation occurs when you push the subwoofer too far and more than the cone was designed to handle.

When this happens, the speaker cone usually tears or separates and in most cases needs to be replaced. There may be an option to re-cone a subwoofer but that should be handled by a professional. This is one area where budget subwoofers seem to break down. This happens much more frequently in a low-end subwoofers made of cheaper materials. Mid-range and high-end will often times use high-quality materials for their cones like polypropylene and even kevlar. Materials like this will help provide longevity to your subwoofer.

Hopefully, these 5 facts about car subwoofers have helped you understand the basic usage and functionality of these speakers. There is nothing like a great sounding subwoofer, so choosing the correct configuration and properly maintaining yours can lead to years of enjoyment.

Focal has been consistently known as one of the top brands in all of audio for many years now. However, are they actually even worth the price tag? Are they actually as good as they say they are or are they overpriced? The answer to that question really lies within what is most important to you as a consumer.

If you are someone who is looking to get the best bang for your buck, then you should probably be looking elsewhere for your audio system. They heavily emphasize their quality of materials to differentiate themselves from the competition. They offer lines with speaker cones made of flax, carbon fiber and even Kevlar.

Innovative Technology

They also emphasize their unique technology. For example, their tweeters are typically inverted dome tweeters. This technology improves the efficiency of the tweeter while offering high dynamics.

They also have implemented many other innovative ideas that improve the damping qualities of their speakers. The “W” sandwich cone, the Polyglass cone, and the beryllium tweeter all have an emphasis on high rigidity.

Quality materials combined with innovative technologies produce the highest fidelity audio system available on the market.

Unique Design

The last important quality that Focal uses to differentiate themselves is their emphasis on their unique look. Focal wants their appearance of their speakers to standout in a world of black and grey rubber speakers. They don’t look like anything else on the market. Their Utopia line look like a piece of art and their K2 Power Line have an unmistakable yellow cone.

Who Are They For?

At the end of the day you are buying a brand. The reputation behind Focal precedes them. They are known as one of the premier brands in audio for a reason. They are not the speaker for everyone, but Focal seems to be okay with that. They separate themselves through their innovative technology and design. They do that by designing and manufacturing everything themselves.

Are they worth the price tag? The answer to that question comes down to where your priorities lie. If you have the resources to purchase Focal audio equipment, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

When writing this article I am going under the impression that you have already installed an aftermarket radio in your car. If you are in need of a new head unit, please refer to our article about the best car stereos or the best car stereos under $300. Also, I am not taking into account any additional power output you may need. Please read this article to see if it’s time upgrade your alternator.

We are frequently asked by people new to car audio: how much does it cost to install a subwoofer? They want the extra bass for their music, but they really don’t know where to start. In this article, I am going to break down a few separate audio upgrades at varying prices.

Easy to Install & Affordable

The first option I want to discuss is an under-seat subwoofer with an integrated amp. The NVX QBUS8v2 is an 8-inch subwoofer that is a great option who wants to quickly upgrade their factory sound system. It is incredibly compact and easy to install even for a beginner. As I stated before, it also has an integrated amp along with it. This means that you won’t have to wire your sub to an external amp because it is all housed in one convenient enclosure. Plus, you’ll need a wiring kit. One reliable wiring kit would be this NVX XKIT82. This is a 100% copper wiring kit meant specifically for a monoblock or a 2-channel amp. Your total would be $154.94. You could also consider getting a second enclosure which would just double that price and put you at just over $300.

NVX QBUS8v2

Mid-range

For a more noticeable upgrade in sound quality for a bit higher price point you should look no further than the JL Audio 12W0v2-4. This is by far one of our highest rated subs that we sell. Currently it is rated 4.9 stars on 624 customer reviews. This sub offers great sound quality for the price and it can handle power up to 300W RMS. You could pair this with this Single 12″ Sealed MDF Subwoofer Enclosure. This is also a very well-reviewed product with 4.7 stars on 154 customer reviews. For an amp, a great Monoblock option would be the NVX BDA7501. At 4 ohms it will output 450W RMS. Finally, you’ll need an amplifier wiring kit to wire everything together. You could utilize the wiring kit I discussed earlier. That brings you to a total of $324.96.

Superior Sound Quality

Obviously, there are higher quality sound options available, but the cost will reflect that. The most difficult thing about upgrading your subwoofer to a $300 or $400 plus price point is the expense of the amplifier that will ultimately output that amount of power. If you were to get a 4-ohm subwoofer that can handle 1000W RMS, it may only cost $400. However, an amp like the Alpine PDX-M12 could end up costing you $600 on top of that. It’s a very high quality amp, but the price tag displays that as well.

Another option we offer is a subwoofer in the $200 range. If you were to simply upgrade to a $200 12-inch sub like the NVX XQW124 for example, you could use that same NVX amp I talked about before. Plus, you could keep the same box enclosure.

Companies are constantly bragging about the amount of power their speakers and subs can handle. They throw out these huge numbers especially those who are in the budget range. Some of these more affordable speakers heavily advertise their peak power. But it is incredibly important to understand the distinct difference between peak and RMS power.

We wrote an article regarding this subject two years ago, but it is important to revisit this subject because there are a lot of misunderstandings about it.

Peak Power

Peak power is only the maximum power level your speakers are able to utilize. It is never recommended to play your speakers at the peak power level. You could easily blow your speaker if you use your speakers at their peak power level for a long period of time.

RMS Power

RMS power is the level of power your speaker will be able to comfortably perform at for countless hours. This means that you can play your speakers at the RMS power rating without the risk of blowing your speaker.

Why Companies Display Peak Power

Companies display the peak power rating simply as a way to market to their consumers. Customers will see this massive number and not look into it any further and end up overpowering their speakers and blowing them. It’s like selling a car based off its top speed. Some car companies may try to brag about their car’s top speed when in reality you are never really supposed to go that speed. What really matters is something like the car’s acceleration and it’s 0-60 time. How fast a car accelerates would actually be helpful on an everyday basis while its top speed would not. Peak power is a large number that sounds cool, just like a car’s top speed, but it is something you will not use on an everyday basis while RMS power is.

It is also important to note that many companies offer warranties on their products if the speaker gets blown. However, they will not cover a blown speaker if you actually exceed the RMS rating.

Continue to educate yourself about car audio and more by visiting our blog and our learning center. Furthermore, always remember to pay attention to the RMS power when you are in the market for something new whether that be speakers, subs or even amps.

Main Points to consider when matching Car Subwoofer and Amplifier

Are you wondering how to match a car subwoofer and amplifier? Look no further because this blog will answer all your questions. There are three main points to consider when matching a subwoofer and an amplifier:

RMS Power Rating

Impedance

Type of Amp

RMS Power Rating

The RMS power is the measure of continuous power the subwoofer can accept. This is the amount of watts the subwoofer can dissipate in the form of heat and vibration without damaging the voice coil. Although max power might be a more appealing number than RMS power, this only represents the subwoofer’s capability of handling quick bursts of power rather than sustained power. Always utilize the RMS power rating.

If you are wiring two subwoofers to an amplifier, you must combine the RMS power rating of both the woofers to determine the power rating of the amp. For example two NVX VSW124v2 12″ subwoofers have 600w RMS each; 1,200w combined. What this means is that you’ll need an amplifier with a power rating between 1,080 and 1,440 watts. The perfect match is the NVX JAD1200.1 monoblock amplifier. It’s as if NVX planned these products to be used together!

Here is the calculation I used to find the power range of the amplifier:

Take the total watts and multiple it by .9 and by 1.2. This will give you the power range of your amplifier. This formula can be applied to your system and has been confirmed by the experts. It is encouraged you get an amplifier with extra power because this gives you more reserved power also known as headroom. This reduces heat exposure which is detrimental to your amp’s health. If you underpower your amplifier, your subs will output distortion causing excessive heat on the voice coil.

2. Impedance

Definition: The electrical resistance of a speaker restricting the flow of electricity, measured in ohms.

Impedance directly affects the load of the amplifier not the power requirement of the subwoofer. So when you wire your subs at 4 ohms versus 2 ohms, there will be a significant difference in power output. For example the Boss R1100M runs at 550w at 4 ohms or 1,100w at 2 ohms. But this amplifier is unable to accept a 1 ohm load because the amp will immediately go into protect mode or run excessively hot.

Never go against the specifications the manufacturer has listed. For extra help use our Subwoofer Wiring Diagram. This is a comprehensive tool designed for almost any system!

3. Amplifier

A car amplifier ranges from 1-6 channels. A monoblock amplifier is the best choice for powering subwoofers because a monoblock amp is designed to output tons of power at low impedance. You can use a 2 or 4 channel amp but this limits your power output and impedance. When bridging channels you combine the output of the 2 channels and suddenly 4 channels becomes 2 channels and 2 channels becomes 1 channel. Note that a 2 or 4 channel amp bridged usually cannot accept a load lower than 4 ohms.

Monoblock amps can power as many subs as it wants as long as the minimum impedance is not exceeded and the output power matches.

When purchasing an amplifier ONLY buy products that are CEA compliant.

If you don’t play your music at high volumes and your car is not massive, than a 300 watt sub will satisfy your needs assuming you have a compatible amplifier.

4. Sonic Secret

The enclosure plays a huge role in the sound quality and output of your system. Note that ported enclosures require a subsonic filter and a sealed enclosure benefits from a more powerful amplifier. Never cheap out on the enclosure build, your system will suffer.

Any audiophile will tell you that you need an aftermarket sound system. No matter what you drive, the manufacturer placed the audio components at the bottom of the priority list when designing your vehicle. It’s not a life or death decision, rather a luxury we all deserve. Why punish yourself; pursue the perfect aftermarket system and reap the benefits every single day of your life. You’ll need a head unit, amp, speakers and of course everyone’s favorite component a subwoofer. However, many people are discouraged because of the few bassheads that ride around with music so loud you can hear them coming from a few blocks away. Luckily Sonic Electronix is going to give you a variety of options so you can enjoy your favorite music.

And realistically no matter your music taste low frequencies are an integral part of any song. Without bass you are leaving out a portion of the frequencies that will ruin your favorite music. The size of your woofer, RMS power rating, enclosure type and a few other factors all contribute to how powerful your bass will be. And when you have quality parts like a 15″ NVX VCW woofer powered by a NVX JAD series amplifier, with NVX XSP6ACT component speakers in the front and NVX VSP coaxial speakers in the rear powered by an NVX MVPA series mini amp; you will be playing your music so loud that you will become one of those bassheads you’ve always despised.

Enhance your Music

Bass is apart of any music genre. Whether it be a double bass in an orchestra, electric bass in a rock band, or the bass line in your favorite House track, low frequencies are apart of your music. However it would be foolish to say bass is incorporated evenly across all music types. Choosing what size subwoofer works best for you is going to depend on the music you listen to. 8 inch subwoofers make for an easy install and often will fit into factory locations. This is an excellent choice for punk, metal, alternative, rock, country; genres that aren’t focused on low frequencies. A 10 inch woofer would also be a fine choice for these types of music because it will not overwhelm your system with bass.

12″, 15″ and beyond are going to produce dominating bass, but you can always alter your settings on your amp so a woofer this size doesn’t have to drown your music with bass. These woofers are large, heavy and effective. If you are an avid rave goer or Hip Hop enthusiast this is the size for you. The best part is that if your girlfriend talks too loud while in the car, look no further because a subwoofer this size will deny her any chance of being heard. Essentially if you are looking for bass, these are the sizes that will satisfy your needs.

Power

RMS Power Rating should always be incorporated when considering what subwoofer you want. Peak power is not sustainable and will give you sound for only a few seconds. Make sure when constructing your system that you match the amplifier’s power with the power handling of your subwoofer. Often times people think underpowering their sub is a safe bet if they aren’t sure what the power specifications are but this is a bad idea and will fry your woofer. Before making any purchase always ensure the power handling fulfills your audio need and that you have the right amp to power your investment.

Enclosure

The two most common enclosure builds are ported and sealed. Choosing which is best for you really comes down to personal preference and music taste. Ported enclosures create a more powerful bass line. Genres focused on bass like rap, trap, dubstep, house, etc. will be best served in a ported enclosure. A sealed enclosure has more defined low frequencies contributing to overall sound fullness. This is recommended for genres focused on all frequencies. In addition, a lot of manufacturers are releasing complete packages that include, enclosure, subwoofer, wiring kit, and sometimes even speakers and an amplifier. If you aren’t looking for obnoxious bass that’ll be heard three blocks away, it is a safe bet to choose from one or our awesome bundles.

Brands

Not all brands are created equally and anyone that says otherwise is wrong. Sonic Electronix is known for expert customer service, wide product variety, and insane bundles. These two brands are among some of our favorites.

A lot can be said about NVX. At an affordable price you get the components you need without breaking the bank. The revolutionary design of the Q Bus box fits right under your seat! The install process is pretty simple as well. Connect the power to your car’s battery, ground to steel chassis, grab a set of speaker wires for input and you’re done. Once it’s installed you will never see the Q box again but it will deliver clean and accurate bass.

Budget

Your budget will be a major influence in deciding which size, brand, and power specification you choose. Competition grade woofers can run at a few thousand dollars and require an extremely powerful amplifier at also a high cost. A more realistic method of choosing what subwoofer you want is to evaluate what your audio needs are. What are you looking for? Those wanting a little bass to supplement their speakers will do just fine spending a couple hundred dollars on a subwoofer that is already built into an enclosure. But if you’re one of those people that like to be heard three blocks away, which I love personally, you’ll want a larger sub with more power typically at a higher price.

Conclusion

In a studio, your favorite music was recorded with frequencies ranging from 20-20,000hz. And although there are really about 80hz of low frequencies incorporated into these songs, you still need bass or else your music will sound horrible. Never skip a subwoofer when constructing an aftermarket system because you can choose just how powerful you want the bass to be. As long as each component is properly installed and used; you will have concert grade music while driving to work every single day.
