Bluetooth speakers are the product for adventures. With the speaker on hand, the cellphone or media device can be tucked away safely from the elements. Despite their size, these speakers can produce some high quality sound.

Battery life

A feature to consider with most portable devices is how long the battery will last, as well as its charge time. You do not want to take your speaker out of the house expecting all-day playback for it to die after a couple of hours. On average, most Bluetooth speakers’ batteries last about 5-10 hours. Our JBL GO 2 boasts a playback time of 5 hours depending on volume and audio content.

Choose a design that works for your lifestyle

s

If you are looking for something to take with on the go, then something more compact with attachment options may be the way for you. If you plan to have something more stationary, then you can go for a model with light-up panels that can modified or shift per song or even a larger speaker. Knowing how you are going to use your speaker is going to determine what kind of Bluetooth you want to purchase.

Being water-resistant comes in handy, even if you don’t take it to the pool

This may seem like such a small feature to consider, however, if you plan to take your Bluetooth speaker out of the house, making sure it is water-resistant is important. Our NVX GlowXR3 is both weather-resistant and water-resistant with color-changing LED lights, perfect for any indoor or outdoor party.

Sound quality should be examined thoroughly

Sound quality is another important feature to look for in a speaker. Unfortunately, you cannot test out each speaker to see which one works for you. So, how do you know which is best for you? When researching Bluetooth speakers, there are some features to take a look at.

output power: the amount of Watts emitted by the speaker measured in decibels.

frequency range: the greater range of frequency produced by your speaker, the clear the sound is going to be.

sound system: each system has a number of channels, which are the speakers that will be producing the sound.

impedance: the lower the impedance, the better quality of sound your speaker will produce.

Have a budget in mind when looking for the right speaker

Have a budget in mind when looking for the proper Bluetooth speaker. Just because a Bluetooth speaker cost over $100 doesn’t mean it is automatically the best choice. You do not have to break the bank for quality speakers. On the other hand, don’t buy the cheapest speaker either. Find something that is going to work for you. For more information on finding the right Bluetooth speaker for you, check out our post here.

The recent advancements in technology are mind blowing to witness happening right before our eyes. Not too long ago phones were not able to do half of the craziness they do today and now we are basically carrying little computers in our pocket. There is always room for improvement when it comes to technology and one of the main problems I have seen both my friends and family deal with is the need to carry a charger everywhere they go because their devices die so fast.

Most people like to listen to music while they are multitasking on their phones, which kills the battery twice as fast but with a hi-res music player that will all be in the past. So now you can go a day without having to charge your phone a million times. You also can hear a noticeable difference in quality of your music on these devices; its almost as if you are at a live concert without all the screaming fans. Now that I have got your attention let’s explore these things called high res music players.

LOTOO PAW5000 HIGH RES MUSIC PLAYER

Unfortunately you can’t play Pokémon go on this bad boy but don’t jump to any crazy conclusions just yet. With the Lotoo PAW5000 you are able to play Pokémon go on your phone and listen to music way longer on one battery charge than before. Its operating system is SDXC compatible, which extends your storage to 2tb, now that’s a lot of music.

Don’t be misguided by the simple design, the PAW5000 is totally up to date with A2DP Bluetooth to connect to appropriate devices and ample format handling. Hopefully you have not moved all your music needs to streaming services because of course you need digital files or some of your own files to put on this device. The Lotoo PAW5000 is bringing simplicity back into our lives when it comes to technology so give your phone a break and pick up the PAW5000.

FIIO X7 HIGH RES MUSIC PLAYER

There are plenty of music services out right now but most people want to listen to high resolution music files and some of those services just don’t offer that. The Fiio X7 comes with 32GB of internal storage but you can use a microSD which adds up to 128GB. Between all the apps and other important data on your phone it’s just not possible for your phone to hold that much music. With the X7 you are able to have the best of both worlds; you can have more space for apps and have a devices strictly for high res music.

As companies come out with new electronic devices they try to make the build thinner but thick is in right now and that’s what the Fiio X7 has to offer. The thickness is not due to a lack there of updated technology and at the end of the day you are paying for its ability to play higher quality music.

It’s comes with a headphone amplifier that screws onto the bottom but if you would like a stronger amp there are many out there compatible with the Fiio X7. This one is touchscreen so you can feel a little more in your element with this device. What is really cool about the X7 is you can download apps from the google play store so if you don’t own a song you can always download apps like Spotify or Tidal. The Fiio X7 is a fantastic replacement for your phone when it comes to your musical needs.

CALYX M1 HIGH RES MUSIC PLAYER

I know some of us just want to stay a little grounded instead of sending all of our music up in the cloud and with portable manufacturers like Calyx it’s possible to keep your music here on earth. The MI functions as a USB DAC or simply a portable player. This device supports files up to 32-bit depth and has one gigabyte of internal storage.

The Calyx M1 has a battery life up to five or six hours better than most phones when in use full time. The M1 is touchscreen as well and is not prone to any major functionality problems with the screen nor the operating system. It has this unique smooth moving volume slider of the side. Overall the Calyx M1 is a great product, it sound better than any phone, it has slots for micro and standard SD cards, and it drives an array of headphones.

ASTELL & KERN AK380 HIGH RES MUSIC PLAYER

The Astell & Kern AK380 is an amazing representation of the evolution of the high res music player industry. Although it is the most expensive of the bunch, it definitely give you more bang for your buck. It comes with an easy set up for WIFI and a good sized colored touch screen. The AK380 is a striking music player and its build is different from most other players with stronger, more appealing materials. It also has a much larger than other portable music players.

The AK380 has arguably the most authentic audio quality that works with most if not all music formats out there. Most other high res music players don’t download past 24 bit but the AK380 downloads a whopping 32 bit which allows musicians to listen to raw recordings. It has an internal memory of 256 GB but can easily be increased by another 128 GB with a microSD card. It includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, parametric or graphic EQ, DAC, and availability to streaming services.

Astell & Kern’s AK380 is a great device with an amazing design. It offers a large network of features and unique additions that’s have not been seen on other music players let alone a cell phone.

Conclusion

I know it may be hard to let your phone have a break but this is the direction to go in if you have a real love for music and want to hear a higher quality of it. Remember thick is in so don’t worry if your hi res music player is not as thin as your cell phone. As long as it takes you to nirvana, it’s done its job right. So put your phone down and pick up any one of these guys at Sonic Electronix.

Sennheiser is well known for their amazing audiophile-grade open-back headphones such as the HD 800 and HD 650 that offer a natural and spacious feel compared to their closed-back brethren. The only drawback to those headphones is they really can’t be used anywhere but in the quietest of spaces as they have a lot ambient noise bleed through due to their open-back design. Sennheiser says they have solved this problem of generating high-resolution/audiophile sound with their new HD 630VB closed-back headphone. On-top of delivering amazing performance on-the-go, the HD 630VBs come with a host of features that aren’t normally found on audiophile grade monitors. So do these new headphones from Sennheiser deserve to be named after their legendary HD Series?

DESIGN:

FUNCTION: Featuring an aluminum voice coil, combined with a reported total harmonic distortion of less than 0.08 percent (at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL), promises precise, unaltered sonic reproduction across a large frequency range of 10 Hz to 42,000 Hz.

If your musical tastes prefer more bass-heavy listening, Sennheiser has also incorporated a rotary dial to finely tune the amount of boom coming through the drivers. Playback and volume levels can be controlled via the right ear cup, too, and you can take calls with the help of an omnidirectional microphone integrated into the oxygen-free cable.

An even bigger bonus to users is the ability to switch them from iPhone to Android compatible via a slider switch on the bottom right earcup labeled “i” (iPhone) and “G” for Galaxy. This is extremely convenient for households that have both Android and Apple devices. No more need for two different models of headphones for both operating systems.

FORM: As with all high-end Sennheiser headphones the materials used on the HD 630VB are top-notch. First the all aluminum construction lends to a very substantial feeling headphone without being too heavy.

The adjustable/folding headband is made from a sprung steel that has a very comfortable clamping force and is finished off with a padded, high-quality leather cushion. The snug as a bug in a rug ear-cups also use the same high-quality leather which seals very well to your ears and keeps the ambient noise bleed-through to a minimum. These headphones were made for long listening sessions and it shows. The only drawback to the HD 630VB is the cable is not detachable. This might be a deal breaker to the hardcore Audiophiles but most will look past this negative.

PERFORMANCE:

Let’s look at the HD 630VB specs from Sennheiser:

Wearing Style: Headband

Ear coupling: Circumaural

Transducer principle: Dynamic, closed

Frequency Response: 10 – 42,000 Hz

Impedance: 23 ohms

Sound Pressure Level: 114 dB (1 kHz / 1Vrm)

Total harmonic distortion: <0.08% (1kHz, 100dB)

Bass Boost: +/- 5dB at 50 Hz

Contact pressure: 5.5 ~ 6.8N

Weight (headphones excluding cable): 14.2 oz (400 g)

Accessories include carry bag and 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter

Soundstage: The soundstage of the HD 630VB is on the larger side for a closed-back headphone. Thanks in part to the large neodymium dynamic drivers, and variable bass technology that Sennheiser has incorporated into it’s design. Yosi Horikawa’s “Kingdom of Frogs” demonstrates the spaciousness of these quite well. Though they aren’t as wide of a stage as the HD 800s or HD650s, but they’re very good.

Highs: Highs on the HD 630VB are crystal clear and very detailed. They can run a little on the bright side for my taste. It’s all about what the user prefers and most will appreciate the extra oomph these provide. “Dangerous-Oliver Remix,” by Big Data sounds stellar on these Sennheisers.

Mids: This is where I think the HD 630VBs could use a little improvement. Not that they are bad by any means, but on heavy vocal tracks like Labrinth’s “Jealous,” they leave me wanting more. They just don’t give me the live feeling that it’s fellow HD Series do.

Lows: The HD 630VB can reproduce intense sub-bass, but it does so accurately. The variable bass control seems to just fill in the lows, not just exaggerate them. It also lets you taylor the bass quickly for different songs. Because lets face it, all bass is not created equal. There are two songs that I think really show off how dynamic the low frequency range of the HD 630VB truly is. First is Zhu’s “Automatic.” The bass sounds very natural for a closed-back headphone. And with deeper digital bass tones like in the intro to Outkast’s “Speakerboxxx” album, that covers a wide spectrum of the low-end, you get to hear how well the low notes are controlled and represented.

OVERALL:

The HD 630VBs are an extremely fun headphone. They pretty much do everything good and their build-quality is fantastic. This is definitely the one to have as your all-around, good performer that you use on the daily. Combined with their earcup controls and ability to be used with Apple or Android, the Sennheiser HD 630VBs are at the top of my list for closed-back headphones. They are just pure musical fun! And in my honest opinion they do deserve to be in Sennheiser”s HD series line of headphones. This is as close as you’ll get in a closed-back headphone.

Today’s market is crowded with “entry level” audiophile headphones for consumers. HIFIMANS’ newest foray into the battle ground is with the HE400S. Will it live up to what I think can be a game changer in the segment – especially at its sub $300 price point – or did they just cheap out on everything? Keep reading.

FEATURES:

The relatively new HIFIMAN HE400S Planar Magnetic Driver headphone features an elegant, yet simple design. These open-back monitors are made from plastic with a nice silver finish and black accents. The HE400S weigh a mere 12 ounces (350 grams), which is nice, light and quite amazing if you consider the size of the headphones themselves. It also features angled velour ear pads that are very comfortable and can be worn for extended listening sessions without discomfort. Although, I can see how some people with ears that stick out further than mine might find the stock ear pads lacking in depth. The tips of my ears were just barely, barely touching the inside of the cans.

The metal and leather headband has a clamping force that is appropriate and average for the size of the HE400S. The headband was easily adjustable and these would fit most, if not all head types. That being said, some people with a big head like me (I wear a 7-¾” hat) might find them little on the tight side after an hour plus of listening. If your head is on the medium to smaller size, you should be good-to-go. I also tried verifying this with another large-headed coworker and he said they seem fine. So, it might just be me.

Complementing the HE400S is a 4 ft long non-microphonic, cloth sheathed cable that is made from OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper). It features an angled 3.5mm jack (1/4” adapter included) which terminates into dual 2.5mm TRS connectors at the headphones for left and right signal. The isolation from microphonics is excellent, but the cable is a little on the stiff side and seems like it could possibly pinch or break the wire if bent too hard. Overall their build quality is very nice.

PERFORMANCE:

Soundstage: The soundstage of the HE400S is immense. Thanks in part to the planar magnetic drivers and open back design. While listening to “Kingdom of Frogs,” by Yosi Horikawa, it felt like I was in a rain forest listening to music. It’s pretty awesome for sure.

Highs: The highs on the HE400S are crystal clear. Sometimes they can be a little too bright for my taste with electronic music depending on the song. “Secrets,“ by Tiesto can be painful at high volumes, while “Don’t Give Up,” by Chicane sounds amazing.

Mids: The mids sound full and rich without being forceful or unnatural. Songs that have heavy vocals, like Luther Vandross’ “Here and Now” sound like you’re at a venue listening to him live.

Lows: Bass on these headphones is spectacular. It hits the low frequencies with amazing accuracy, depth and clarity. There is nothing overpowering or artificial sounding about it (that is one of my biggest gripes with a lot of headphones like Beats by Dr. Dre). Low frequency transitions are very precise. Good job HIFIMAN for accomplishing such a nice balance.

Equipment Used for Review:

HIFIMAN HE400S Over-ear Planar Magnetic Headphone

Sennheiser HD 650 Over Ear Headphone (Used as Reference Headphones)

Beyerdynamic A 20 Desktop Headphone Amplifier

Fiio E17 Portable Headphone Amplifier

iPad Air

iPhone 6

There is one thing I did notice about the HE400S when using the Beyerdynamic A 20 Desktop Amplifier. It took more volume to drive HE400S than it did the Sennheiser HD650 that I used as a reference set of headphones. The HD 650s made it to about half volume before being maxed out. The HE400S however could take max volume from the A 20 with little to no distortion depending on the song you are listening to at the time. I then listened to the same songs on my iPhone 6 and it was the same deal. Almost like there is some sort of built-in protection for the drivers so they won’t distort. I know most of this has to do with the fact the drivers on the HE400S are planar magnetic and require more power than the HD650s and its dynamic drivers.

**Note: I tried using my Fiio E17 amp with my iPhone 6 and it had no problems driving the HE400S. It actually sounded pretty damn good. Thanks in part to the low impedance and the efficiency of the headphones. They definitely could be used as an everyday headphone at work depending on the noise level because they have a lot of bleed through as they are open back.

OVERALL:

Brilliant is all you need to know about the HIFIMAN HE400S. They have excellent sound quality and for their price I can’t think of another headphone that comes close to matching the value I think HIFIMAN has brought to the table in this segment. Anyone would be proud to add these to their collection. I know I would.

Earbuds are great for just about any application; from going to the gym, on the plane or at the office, there’s a pair of earbuds that will match your needs.

Noise cancelling headphones are the perfect travel companion. Headphones with active noise cancelling all but eliminate the ambient noise around you by creating sound waves that cancel out the incoming sound waves, also known as destructive interference. Noise cancelling headphones are available in over-ear, on-ear and in-ear designs to meet any listening preference and work well with any music genre.

Most headphones on the market today, especially the higher end models, need a little help reaching their full potential. Transforming digital sound data from a device such as your smartphone, tablet or MP3 player to your headphones generally leads to a pretty significant drop in quality. The A200P high-end portable DAC/headphone amplifier from Beyerdynamic is designed to be a solution for this problem. Like any other headphone amplifier/DAC, the A200P converts digital data to analogue music signals between your device and headphones resulting in a level of audio quality that your mobile device simply isn’t designed for. When used with the A200P amplifier, you’ll hear previously unheard details in your music, better contoured and significantly deeper bass and more natural instrumental and vocal reproduction.

Beyerdynamic’s A200P headphone amplifier/DAC meets the most demanding audiophile sound requirements without tying you down thanks to its incredibly compact size. The A200P measures at just over 2″ x 2″ and is only ½” thick and easily fits in any pocket, purse or backpack for on-the-go use. Don’t let the size fool you though; the A200P features an internal rechargeable battery that provides you with up to 11 hours of music playback so you can use it on all of your cross country flights without worrying about running out of juice.

Beyerdynamic also wanted the A200P to be easy to use. They designed intuitive play/pause and track control buttons along the side while the tracking style wheel on the front offers easy volume control. The volume control offers an impressive 135 volume levels allowing you to listen to your music as loud or as softly as you want. The built-in LED display gives you charging, operation and volume indicators. With the A200P, there is no stopping to fiddle with any settings, it can all be done on-the-go.

Perhaps most importantly, the A200P works with both Android and Apple devices as well as both Mac and PC so you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues. The A200P connects to your device via micro USB, Lightning connector or USB (depending on the device you’re using) rather than the typical 3.5mm connection. Beyerdynamic includes a cable for each connection type so you don’t need to worry about having the proper cables; all you need to do is connect your headphones and device to the amp and you’ll be good to go.

Over ear headphones definitely have some great advantages over on ear or in ear headphones when it comes to getting the best sound out of your headphones. Their enclosed ear design allow you to really get lost in your music, since they are more noise cancelling or noise isolating than on ear or in ear earphones. In addition, their design which surrounds the ear allows for excellent sound quality and better bass response. If you are an audiophile, recording artists, musician, or DJ, over ear headphones will allow you to accurately hear your music in the studio or on stage. However, for those who do not want to spend a fortune on quality personal audio, you don’t have to! Here are the three best over the ear headphones under $100.

NVX XPT100

When it comes to over-the-head headphones, there are two major types – on ear and over ear headphones. In short, on ear headphones feature an ear cup design which sits right on top of your ears, while over ear headphones have ear cups that go around your ear, therefore enclosing your entire ear. But what does this mean for your listening experience? Well, because of their design differences, each type will have different features, will have varying levels of sound quality, and will fit the user’s head differently.

On Ear Headphones

On-ear headphones, such as the Sennheiser Momentum on ear headphones, are great because they are lightweight and compact for added portability and extended use. With the earpads resting directly on the user’s ear, they are comfortable to wear for long periods of time and still give off great sound. On-ear headphones are available in various operating principles including closed, open, and semi-open acoustic headphone styles. In addition, you can find on ear headphones that have various popular features such as Bluetooth and in-line microphones. However, because of their on ear design, these headphones do not isolate sound as well as over ear headphones. Therefore, if you are looking for noise isolation or noise cancelling, these are probably not the headphones for you. But, if you have an on-the-go lifestyle or are mostly concerned about comfort and portability, on ear headphones are probably the best choice for you.

Over Ear Headphones

In contrast, over-ear headphones, with their enclosed ear design, offer the most immersive experience in personal audio. While not the most portable type like on ear headphones, full sized over-ear headphones enclose the ear and deliver rich sound through large drivers for the most detailed sound achievable. Available in closed-back, open-back, and semi-open back designs, these headphones’ acoustic detail can be incredible. In addition, over ear headphones, such as Audio Technica’s ATH-M50X headphones, feature impressive noise isolation, since the ear cups surround the ear, as well as other features such as Bluetooth, swivel ear cups, and in line mics. While these headphones can be a bit heavier to wear, they feature excellent sound quality for the everyday listener, recording artists, musicians, DJs, and even video gamers!
